Dairy Queen Is Giving Away Free Fries This Month To Help With Canada's Potato Problem

Has the phrase "free fries" ever not made people excited? The latest company to offer up the delicious side on the house is none other than Dairy Queen Canada. They are doing it in support of Canadian potato farmers.

In an email to Narcity, a Dairy Queen spokesperson announced that the company will be partnering with McCain to give customers a free regular fries when they download the DQ mobile app.

Until September 15, people who get the app and register for an account will be given the offer and will have seven days to redeem it at participating locations (excluding Quebec).

The deal for DQ devotees is part of McCain's #FrenchFriesFeedFarmers campaign on Twitter.

That means you can grab yourself one of Dairy Queen's famous cool treats, and get some fries for dipping (if you're into that sort of thing) at no extra cost.

This year, Canada experienced a massive potato surplus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As restaurants closed down early in the year, the demand for french fries dropped by about 10 to 15%, as Kevin MacIsaac, general manager of the United Potato Growers of Canada, told Narcity in April.

That left farmers with a huge amount of spuds that they couldn't sell, and roughly 2 million pounds of them had to be put into storage.

Ironically, this surplus actually came after Canada was reporting shortages in late 2019 due to weather conditions.

The same thing also happened in 2018, when farmers reported a deficit of the root vegetable.

Some companies appeared to get creative with the sheer amount of produce left over by diminished business, such as Smoke's Poutinerie.

For every one potato dish they sold on April 11 and 12, they donated two pounds of spuds to local food banks. The donations were also matched by the organization Foodies Unite.

So if you really want to support Canadian farmers, you should try eating more french fries. It's the least you can do.
