Ontario Premier Doug Ford has hit out at Justin Trudeau and the federal government for calling an election during the "middle of a fourth wave in a pandemic."
Speaking during a press conference on September 1, Ford blamed the feds for Ontario's delayed rollout of its new vaccine certificate program and said he doesn't care who becomes PM.
He told reporters on Tuesday, "All the premiers, every premier, wanted a vaccine passport and unfortunately, the federal government decided to go into an unnecessary election, which I'm still shaking my head over, in the middle of a fourth wave in a pandemic, then telling us just three weeks ago that they wouldn't be able to get it done till the 24th."
"We either do this, or we risk shutting down the economy, which would even be worse," Ford added.
The premier went on to say that he would not be getting involved in the federal election, adding that his focus remains on the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think I've proved to people around Canada and Ontario […] I don't care if it's the Liberals, Conservatives, whoever ends up becoming the prime minister, I'll be able to work with them," he said.
Despite previously saying that a vaccine certificate was not necessary in Ontario, Ford confirmed on Tuesday that proof of vaccination will be required in many indoor establishments from September 22.
