One Alberta City Is Leading The Country In COVID-19 Cases Right Now

Big yikes for Alberta. As of Monday morning, August 24, the Edmonton health zone has more active COVID-19 cases than any other city in Canada. There are 676 cases of COVID-19 in Edmonton at the time of writing.Â
The city with the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases right now is Montreal. A representative from the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Quebec told Narcity that 480 active cases are confirmed in Montreal as of Sunday, August 23.Â

Vancouver sits at third with 386 cases, according to data provided by the British Columbia Centre Of Disease Control (BCCDC).Â
In mid-August, it was reported that Edmonton had twice the number of active COVID-19 cases as Toronto. The same still holds true a week later.Â
According to the City of Toronto, they've had a total of 15,808 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. 14,350 have recovered, and 1,165 people with the illness have passed away due to complications.Â
This means that there are 293 active cases of COVID-19 in Toronto at the moment.Â
Edmonton's southern neighbours in Calgary have recorded 294 active cases of COVID-19 as of Monday morning, according to the Government of Alberta.Â
Meanwhile, the capital city of Ottawa has 156 active COVID-19 cases, based on the city's data.Â
As for the other provinces, Saskatchewan cities Saskatoon and Regina have five and 14 active cases respectively, according to the Government of Saskatchewan.Â
Meanwhile, Winnipeg in Manitoba has 97 cases at the moment, says their government data.Â
According to Canada Health, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I have nine, seven, and four active cases respectively. Newfound and Labrador have no active cases at the moment.Â
Edmonton's spike in COVID-19 cases has been partly due to a rise in social gatherings, as reported by Dr. Deena Hinshaw. The top doctor has also said the recent cases are being found mainly in younger people.Â
Cases linked to grocery stores and a church gathering have been detected recently, too.Â
In total, 12,748 cases have been recorded in all of Alberta. So far, 230 people have died due to COVID-19 complications and 43 people are being treated at the hospital.Â
