Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's top doctor, announced on Monday, October 5, that COVID-19 cases in Edmonton have led to discussions of further measures in the city.

The number of active cases in Edmonton as of Tuesday morning, October 6, is 894.

The large number of cases identified over the weekend in Edmonton is concerning.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw

Dr. Hinshaw said her team is working with Edmonton health officials and its local government to determine whether "additional measures" might be needed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the city.

"We are taking this seriously and looking closely at what causes are driving the increase that we are seeing," she said.

One "alarming trend" that the province's been seeing with regard to its active cases is that about 11% of people are still going to work or social gatherings while having COVID-19 symptoms or awaiting test results.

Dr. Hinshaw that the province is expecting to see high numbers over the next couple of weeks — a "product of past transmission."

Alberta announced that 578 new cases were recorded over the weekend.
