In an announcement on Sunday, the official Jeopardy! Twitter page confirmed that Alex Trebek had died after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

According to the short statement, the Canadian-American TV personality “peacefully” passed away surrounded by his friends and family. He was 80 years old.

The Ontario-born star revealed he was suffering from pancreatic cancer back in 2019.

Earlier this year, Trebek said the treatment he was receiving was “paying off,” but also made it clear that he’d stop seeking treatment if his condition got worse.

After Trebek's death was confirmed on Sunday, thousands of Canadians took to social media to pay tribute to his life.

"RIP to a Canadian" began trending on Twitter, as celebrities, politicians and members of the public paid homage to the Sudbury-local.

An outpouring of love came from several Canadian icons, including Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh, Ryan Reynolds and Dan Levy.

"Thank You"

Multi-Emmy winning Canadian Dan Levy was one of the first celebrities to take to social media after the announcement that Trebek had passed away.

Sharing Jeopardy!’s tweet, the Schitt's Creek star simply added, “Thank you, Alex.”

"True Canadian Legend"

Ontario’s premier was quick to pay his respects to Trebek on Twitter, describing the host as “a true Canadian legend.”

Not only was the host born in the province of Ontario, but he also attended the University of Ottawa.

“Alex touched so many lives. He will be truly missed,” Ford concluded.

"An Outstanding Canadian"

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson paid tribute to the Canadian icon by sharing some of his achievements via Twitter.

The mayor explained that Trebek had given back “generously” to the city over the years and said he’d remained humble despite his huge success.

Watson also confirmed that the flag outside the Heritage Building at Ottawa’s City Hall will remain lowered to half-mast until sunset on Wednesday.

"Lost an Icon"

Sharing a photo of himself and the Jeopardy! host greeting one another, the prime minister also shared a tribute to the Canadian talent.

“We have lost an icon,” Trudeau wrote, adding, “My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who are mourning this tremendous loss."

"A Canadian Legend"

While most Canadians didn’t actually get the opportunity to meet Alex Trebek, this one did!

Sharing a photo of the time they appeared on Jeopardy!, one Canadian Twitter user confirmed that the host was “just as professional and engaging” as we’d expect.

“RIP to a Canadian legend,” they added.

"Rest in Power"

Jagmeet Singh also made it clear that he was mourning the loss, describing Trebek as “like an extended family member.”

The NDP leader praised the host’s “gentle approach, big heart and warm demeanor,” which he says helped to share “a little bit of Canada with the world.”

"We Love You, Alex"

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds shared perhaps one of the most emotional tributes to Trebek online, describing him as “gracious and funny” among other things.

“We love you, Alex. And always will,” he concluded.
