The long winter of no events and gatherings in B.C. is set to continue for another month.

In a B.C. COVID-19 update on January 7, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that the province is extending its ban on gatherings to February 5, 2021, because of rising COVID-19 numbers.

February 5 New end date for B.C.'s ban on gatherings and events

B.C. first prohibited all gatherings and events back in November, then extended the ban in December.

Choking up as she talked at Thursday's press conference, Dr. Henry encouraged British Columbians to stay strong and stay virtually connected through another month of severely limited in-person contact.

"No matter how tired we are, we must stop and re-think and re-double our efforts now," Dr. Henry said.

"This virus doesn't know that we haven't seen our friends in months. It doesn't know that it's our grandmother's birthday."

Dr. Henry mentioned the U.K. variant of COVID-19, surges in Ontario and Quebec, and the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine, calling the next few weeks B.C.'s "riskiest time."

"This is our winter, but we know that spring will come," Dr. Henry said.
