An officer from the Burlington OPP detachment heard an interesting excuse for not having insurance when he pulled over a driver for speeding on Queen Elizabeth Way near Hamilton Sunday morning.

According to the OPP, the 26-year-old told police he doesn't get insurance on his vehicles because he doesn't believe people should have to pay for car insurance.

After pulling the man over, OPP realized that the plates on the truck were from another car owned by the driver.

After chatting with the driver, police reportedly heard his unusual reasoning for not having car insurance

Speaking to Narcity over the phone, Constable Westhead of the OPP said that the man had been charged for driving with no insurance prior to the incident — an offence that can lead to a fine of $5,000.

"He said to me, 'I just don't bother getting insurance on any of my vehicles and I never will,'" Westhead said.

"I'm not sure where this guy's getting this money," Westhead continued, "but he even said to me at one point that '[if] I gotta go to jail, so be it.'"

Ultimately, the driver was charged with three offences — speeding, driving without insurance, and using plates not authorized for a vehicle.
