The time has finally come to say goodbye to 2020 and welcome 2021, but New Year's celebrations won't look the same as we exit the worst year of all time, especially the famed Times Square celebration in New York City.

Just a few hundred select citizens, the majority of which are health care workers, will get to attend the event live and in-person, while the rest of us average joes can either watch on TV or even visit the spot virtually in video game form.

Work on display around the virtual Times Square

In order to attend the event with your custom 3D avatar, you'll need to download the official "VNYE" app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

When you visit virtual Times Square with your beautiful digital self, you'll then have the chance to complete different missions, check out a museum featuring work from artists around the globe and even head to the dance pad and show off your sweet moves.

Then when the time comes around, you'll have to head up to the observation deck and watch the virtual ball drop in real-time and celebrate with all of your in-game friends.

In addition to being able to explore a virtual Times Square from the app, you can also watch a live stream of the event as well as different streams of celebrations from around the world.

You can even take amazing New Year's themed selfies using the augmented reality feature, so you can fill your Insta feed with pics of you kissing 2020 goodbye.
