Canada Is Officially In For A Super Active Hurricane Season & The Landfall Risk Is Up
Batten down the hatches, it's going to be a stormy season this year. The hurricane season Canada is in for will be super active with lots of named storms. There's an also increased chance of the tropical systems making landfall on the east coast.
With the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season already underway, The Weather Network has analyzed forecasts from the National Hurricane Center in the U.S. and Colorado State University.
Canada's east coast is expected to see an active season this year.
The National Hurricane Center has forecasted 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes and three to six major ones that are category three or stronger.
Based on TWN's analysis, the higher end of that spectrum is most likely.
That means it should be an above-average season.
Now, the tricky thing is whether or not those storms will have a path that reaches Canada.
Research meteorologists at Colorado State University put out a landfall probability forecast.
With that, the chance of a major hurricane making landfall along the east coast of the U.S. is 45% above normal.
According to TWN, that puts Atlantic Canda at an elevated risk to be hit by storms this year.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted near the end of May that there's a 60% chance that the 2020 season will have higher than normal storm activity.
Bob Robichaud, warning preparedness meteorologist with the centre, said that it's important for Canadians on the coast to be prepared ahead of time for possible landfalls.
The hurricane season in the Atlantic officially started on June 1 and lasts until November 30.
As for timing this year, there will be a period of quieter weather in the tropics but that will all change in July.
According to TWN, tropical activity is very low before mid-August and the peak of the season comes in early September.
In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian crept up the east coast of the U.S. after devastating The Bahamas and made landfall in Nova Scotia.
There was extensive damage to personal and commercial properties, cars and the natural landscape.
