If you're one of the many Canadians who rely on air conditioning to get through the summer heat, you'll want to check out this product recall in Canada.

Tens of thousands of air conditioners sold across Canada by multiple brands are being recalled after customers reported finding mould inside the units.

Health Canada has shared a major product recall for nearly 46,000 U and U+ window air conditioners sold under popular brand names like Midea, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Comfort Aire and more.

The recall is linked to a microbial hazard involving pooled water inside the units, which can lead to the growth of mould — potentially putting some users at risk of respiratory issues or infections.

Health Canada says pooled water in these units may not drain quickly enough, creating conditions where mould can develop. This can lead to allergic reactions and even respiratory issues in some individuals.

As of June 3, five reports of mould had been made in Canada, with no reports of associated illnesses. In the U.S., the company has received 152 reports of mould, including 17 who report experiencing symptoms like respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and/or sore throats.

What to do if you have one

If your unit is affected, Health Canada says you should immediately contact Midea for a free repair or a full or prorated refund, depending on the purchase date or manufacturing date.

To request a refund, consumers will need to either return the unit using a prepaid shipping label provided by Midea or submit a photo showing that the unplugged power cord has been cut. For those choosing a repair, Midea will either send a technician or a self-repair kit, which includes a new drain plug and a bubble level.

Health Canada is also reminding the public that under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to resell, donate or give away recalled items.

Which air conditioners are recalled?

The affected models were manufactured by GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., Ltd. and sold between March 2020 and May 2025.

These white U-shaped window AC units were sold across Canada in sizes of 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 BTU and were typically marketed as Wi-Fi-enabled units with app control and remote operation.

The brand name is printed on each unit, and the model numbers are printed on a label located on the front right side of the unit when facing it.
