The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) operates over 50 prisons that house thousands of inmates across the country.

56 Escapes from federal custody since 2017

The Pacific and Prairie regions have seen the most in the last four years, with 10 and 37, respectively. The Prairies have 18 prisons and the Pacific region has nine.

Despite its large population, Ontario has only had two escapes at its 12 federal prisons, one in 2018 and one in 2019. Quebec has had six and operates 13 prisons.

Out of all six of its prisons, Atlantic Canada has only reported one escaped inmate between 2017 and now.

According to the CSC's data, there was an uptick in prison escapes in 2018 with 20 over the course of the year. In 2020, there were only eight.

One of those was back in October when a man serving a life sentence in Mission, B.C. escaped overnight, prompting the CSC to issue a public safety alert.

Federal custody refers to individuals sentenced to two years or more and who are residing in a CSC correctional facility. It's also worth noting that there are no CSC facilities north of Edmonton.
