You've likely already heard about Lake Louise. But because it's Alberta's crown jewel, it's often buzzing with tourists year-round. That's why you've got to look to other beautiful towns in the province to get your fill of wonderful natural scenes. Jasper, Alberta is just waiting to be discovered.
Jasper and the surrounding area is where you need to be if you want to see all the wonderful sights located in Jasper National Park. It's under a five-hour drive from downtown Calgary and an even shorter four-hour drive from Edmonton.
It's got everything that Lake Louise has: glorious mountains, beautiful turquoise lakes, hiking trails suitable for all levels, and a high-standard of hospitability.
But if you're over the crowds in Banff and Lake Louise, then you need to make your way over to this hot spot that's less crowded but just as charming.
First of all, let's talk about the lakes. Jasper has five surreal lakes right near town. So if you're starting to observe a crowd developing at one lakeshore, you can change locations without losing your view.
Maligne Lake is by far the most well-known lake in the area. According to Parks Canada, it's actually the largest natural lake in all of the Canadian Rockies.
The lake is 49 kilometres from the town of Jasper and there are many trails and loops that will take you to a spectacular lookout.*
Considering that this region of the country is literally overflowing with countless lakes, Maligne still stands out.

Outside of Maligne, you've got a bunch of other lakes to look forward to.
Pyramid and Patricia Lakes form serene oases around Pyramid Mountain. Both lake trails are around five kilometres and can be completed by hikers of all levels.
And the unbelievable Mount Edith Cavell can be clearly seen from the shores of Cavell Lake.
Horseshoe Lake is another unforgettable lake that's got to be on your Jasper bucket list. You can view it through just a short one-and-a-half kilometre trek.
So if you're seeking a lake paradise to quench your wanderlust, you may have just found it.
Besides the lakes, there are some amazing mountain-related activities you can do as well. Jasper SkyTram will literally transport you to the top of Whistlers Peak via a cablecar.
Another terrific lookout is the Columbia Icefields Skywalk. This is a glass walkway build between the mountains. Stepping on the platform will literally make you feel like you're floating in the air.
All in all, Jasper is a lovely small town that's close to a bunch of scenic attractions that would otherwise go unnoticed by visitors. If you want to take a break from Lake Louise, Jasper is waiting for you.
