Kelly Clarkson Files A Petition To Change Her Name & Says It 'Fully Reflects' Who She Is

Her decision comes in the middle of an ongoing divorce battle.

Western Canada Editor

Kelly Clarkson is attempting to start a fresh new chapter in her life — and she could have a new name to go with it.

The 39-year-old singer filed a petition to the Los Angeles Superior Court to legally change her name, according to court documents obtained by NBC.

She wants to drop her last name, Clarkson, and keep her middle name Brianne. Her request is to change her name to Kelly Brianne.

She expressed her "desire" to change her name for personal reasons.

She wrote in the court documents: "My new name more fully reflects who I am."

According to NBC, a hearing to decide whether her application is accepted is scheduled for March 28.

Her petition comes in the middle of an ongoing divorce battle with husband Brandon Blackstock. The pair had been married for nearly seven years when, according to TODAY, Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020.

They have two children together — seven-year-old daughter River Rose and five-year-old son Remington.

In divorce filings obtained by TODAY, she cited "irreconcilable differences" between her and Blackstock and requested joint custody of their children.

However, in November 2020, a judge in California granted Clarkson primary custody of the children, allowing Blackstock access a few weekends a month, according to TMZ.
