Chris Crocker, the creator of the iconic "Leave Britney Alone" video, just weighed in on the drama surrounding the new Framing Britney Spears documentary.

In 2007, Crocker gained viral fame for an emotional video defending Britney Spears.

I hope Britney not only gets the freedom she deserves, but that Femme queer people are not tortured in the media when showcasing humanity.  Chris Crocker

Now 14 years later, Crocker posted a statement on Twitter about the attention the video got with a caption that reads, "Me saying Leave Britney Alone was never the issue, though."

In the message, Crocker addressed that nobody took the video seriously because at the time he was a "gender-bending teenager" and people's reaction was "transphobic."

Crocker also said that people reaching out now to say "Chris, you were right" about Britney might feel good if they had understood the true reason that the video wasn't taken seriously.

The New York Times' Spears documentary focuses on the "#freebritney" movement and the way she was treated by the media in the 2000s with misogyny and exploitation.

But Crocker said when he defended Spears back in 2007, "I had to fear for my life."

The viral star concluded by hoping "Britney gets the freedom she deserves," and "that Femme queer people are not tortured in the media when showcasing humanity."
