Canadians Lost Nearly 30,000 Jobs In December Alone & These Industries Were Hit Hardest

According to a Canadian national employment report, the country lost nearly 30,000 jobs in the month of December alone.

Thanks to the report, we know which industry sectors bore the brunt of it the most last year too.

28,800  Canadian jobs lost in December 2020

The country had to say goodbye to countless jobs in 2020, due to COVID-19.

Employment decreased by 28,800 in December, per the ADP Canada's national employment report.

The figure comes from payroll data that " measures the change in total nonfarm payroll employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis."

The jobs that saw the biggest setback were in industries such as manufacturing which accounted for over 17,000 jobs lost.

Other sectors that were also hit hard were in business services and technical services, seeing over 10,000 positions gone respectively.    

On the other side of things, it was fields like education and healthcare that saw the most increase in employment in December. 

Interestingly, just one month prior, employment in Canada increased by 40,800 and the biggest increase then was in business services which saw 12,500 new jobs.

According to Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, this big shift from November was "a result of the ease of restrictions on businesses and social activities."
