North Carolina DMV's Are Finally No Longer Issuing These Types Of License Plates

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles made the decision to no longer issue license plates depicting the Confederate battle flag.

The decision comes after the department tried to develop new artwork without the flag that could be used by members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) but were unable to reach an agreement.

(The DMV) has determined that license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag have the potential to offend those who view them. NCDOT

NCDOT said they will continue to recognize the SCV as a civic organization, meaning they are entitled to a specialty plate.

"However, SCV’s classification as a civic organization does not entitle it to dictate the contents of the government speech on that specialty plate," said NCDOT. 

The department agreed to either issue members of the SCV standard plates and refund any specialty-plate fees paid or allow them to choose a different specialty plate until new artwork is found.
