Ottawa Just Reported No New COVID-19 Cases For The First Time Since March

There’s some good news for residents of O-Town! On June 17, the national capital confirmed that there were no new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa. This is the first time the city has reported zero new cases since March.

On Wednesday, June 17, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) shared some good news with residents of the capital city.

The health agency confirmed that there had been no new cases of novel coronavirus between June 15 and 16, and no new deaths linked to the disease.

This is the first time the city has had no new cases of COVID-19 since March 25, right at the beginning of the pandemic in Canada.

Latest figures show that there are now only 69 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, while 1,707 people are considered to be recovered.

The first local case was officially diagnosed on March 11. Since then, officials have confirmed 2,036 cases of the disease, and 260 deaths.

Mayor Jim Watson addressed the news in a tweet on Wednesday, writing, "Great news but let’s not let our guard down! #FlattenTheCurve"

This is promising news for the city as even more services and non-essential businesses began reopening last week.

This update from Ottawa comes as the whole province continues on a downward trajectory when it comes to COVID-19 cases.

Several regions in Ontario have recently been reporting zero new cases of the disease, including The Timiskaming Health Unit, Sudbury and North Bay Parry Sound.

The good news follows a recent announcement from Premier Doug Ford, during which he confirmed that hair salons, swimming pools and restaurants could reopen under strict social distancing rules.

Physical distancing restrictions were also eased-off in the province last weel, allowing Ontarians to hug their loved ones once again.

Last weekend, Newfoundland and Labrador confirmed that they would be closing down some mobile testing centres, after 20 days with no new cases.
