Gov. DeSantis Just Dropped A Campaign-Style Video & Twitter Is Not Having It

The timing wasn't great.

The Sunshine State governor's "unity" message on his pandemic response isn't fairing well. Gov. Ron DeSantis released a campaign-style video on Twitter touting his COVID-19 response, and it's being poorly received. The video is being outright panned on social media.

"Getting through this pandemic requires unity of purpose," DeSantis wrote leading up to the video, which showcases his roundtable meeting with the mayors of Miami-Dade County, the hardest-hit area of the virus in Florida.

"I appreciate the hard work of Miami-Dade's mayors and I'm 100% confident we are going to get through this."

However, Twitter users didn't quite feel his version of "unity" in the video.

Shortly after posting, it's already becoming the target of complaints by Floridians, who view DeSantis' "top-down" approach to COVID-19 as the main reason the state is seeing a record spike in daily cases.

"@GovRonDeSantis you haven't done a [expletive] thing for the people of Florida except make them ignorant to what is going on around them," wrote one user. "Wear a mask."

Another put DeSantis' apparent lack of unified response in a more diplomatic way.

"It also requires a unified approach. Try a whole-state mask requirement," they tweeted. "Why won't you do the very simple things you could to save Floridians? Why do you insist on sticking & Killing us? Design or stupidity?"

She ended with the state's now-infamous hashtag: #DeSantisLiesFlordiansDie.

Others put it more bluntly. "And how many people will die while we 'get through this,'" one user asked. "'Get through this' is not a call to action, more like a let's see what happens attitude. Mandate masks, put on a mask, shut down and shut up."

DeSantis has been taking a lot of heat from Floridians the past few weeks due to his COVID-19 response and decision to reopen schools in August.

With over 100,000 new cases in just 10 days, many are calling for DeSantis to issue a mandatory face mask order statewide.

DeSantis has so far refused to do so and has further emphasized that his approach is the best way to lead Florida out of the pandemic, even as the numbers continue to trend upward.
