The Body Shop Canada is closing 33 stores and ending online sales after filing for bankruptcy protection.

The Canadian subsidiary of the U.K. cosmetics brand announced on Friday it's starting liquidation sales at stores across Canada immediately.

In a press release issued on March 1, The Body Shop Canada said it currently has 105 stores across the country, so the closures affect about a third of those.

"The Body Shop Canada is commencing this NOI process to obtain a stay of proceedings to provide additional breathing room while it evaluates its strategic alternatives and implements certain restructuring initiatives," the press release says.

The company has not announced how many employees will be impacted by the closures.
