Ontario's police watchdog has launched an investigation after a 19-year-old man under investigation for assault was found dead at the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus.

Preliminary information suggests the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Peel Regional Police officers located him at a UTM student residence, the Special Investigations Unit said on Tuesday.

News of the person's death comes after the school issued a shelter-in-place order Monday night due to reports of police activity near McLuhan Court residence, a complex that houses hundreds of first-year students.

Peel police later said the incident had been resolved and there was no threat to public safety in an update early Tuesday morning.

The SIU alleged the man who died had assaulted a woman in Brampton on Monday afternoon and police located him at a student residence near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road.

A gunshot was heard and the man was pronounced dead early Tuesday, the watchdog said, noting there were no other injuries reported.

Peel police said reports of an armed individual were what brought them to the McLuhan Court residence that night.

When officers arrived on scene, the suspect discharged a gun inside a dorm room and officers immediately worked to evacuate the residence and surrounding area, police said.

After making unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the suspect inside, police said officers entered the unit and found the man dead at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The SIU said it invoked its mandate because Peel Regional Police officers were in and around the scene at the time of the man's death.

The watchdog said there is no threat to public safety.

UTM said its campus remained open Tuesday but classes were cancelled, calling the incident "deeply unsettling to members of the UTM community" in a statement.

The school said it expanded drop-in counselling services Tuesday for those impacted by the incident and on-site support is available for students in residence.
