According to producer Marike Emery, the show usually travels all around the country and invites people to do interviews and in-person baking.
In March 2020, it became clear that the audition process wouldn't be able to go on as usual so it went virtual.
From about 2,000 applicants, 200 bakers were chosen to do a video call during lockdown where they would have a chat and then show something they baked recently.
Then there was an invitation-only video bake-along that less than 40 people were selected for and then 10 bakers made the final cut.
Emery said that doing the auditions over Zoom allowed for bakers from Winnipeg and Quebec City to be on the show for the first time ever since those aren't places where in-person auditions have been done before.
You can watch the previous three seasons, including the two where Dan Levy was the host, on Netflix.
