The area that would become Stiltisville started in the 1930s with just one shack, built by "Crawfish Eddie Walker, who built the first home on stilts right in the bay.
Over the years, more of these stilt houses would be built in Biscayne Bay, resembling a neighborhood built entirely on the water, complete with nightlife clubs. By the beginning of the 1960s, 27 homes were built in the Bay.
The structures that didn't succumb to the ravages of hurricanes were deeded to the State of Florida in 1985, and in the early 2000s, Stiltisville became part of Biscayne National Part, putting the remaining seven homes still standing in the hands of the Stiltsville Trust.
