A Brampton girl has become one of the youngest people to die of COVID-19 in Canada.

Emily Victoria Viegas was just 13 years old when she died on April 22, 2021, making her one of only eight minors who have lost their lives to the disease in Canada, according to national data.

Viegas lived in a two-bedroom apartment in a hot-spot neighbourhood in Brampton with her family and all but one member of her household tested positive, according to The Globe and Mail. Now, the family needs help covering funeral and burial costs.

A GoFundMe has been started for Viegas and her family and it has raised nearly $42,000 at the time of publication, four times more than the fundraiser's goal.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown tweeted to share his "deepest condolences" with the family. "This is beyond heart wrenching. As a parent, I am lost for words," he wrote. "We can never underestimate the seriousness of COVID-19 and the variants."
