Cineplex Theatres Aren’t Reopening In Some Parts Of Ontario Even If They're Allowed

They would only be able to let 50 people in at a time.

Movie lovers are going to have to wait if they want to catch a film in Ontario’s orange zones.

Cineplex theatres will be keeping their doors closed in certain regions as other venues begin to open this weekend.

The movie-theatre company told Narcity that their locations in Toronto, Ottawa, Peel and York will remain closed for the time being.

We will not be reopening our theatres in the ‘Restricted’ areas (aka: Toronto, Peel Region, York Region and Ottawa).” Cineplex

Galaxy Cinemas Cornwall will also keep their doors closed this Saturday.

According to Cineplex, the move comes because of the restricted capacity that Ontario has put in place for regions in the orange zone.

Ontario’s COVID-19 Response Framework states that only 50 people are allowed in cinemas.

Cineplex argues that this capacity is not enough to make opening back up a good business move.

“From a financial perspective, the capacity limitation the Ontario Government has put in place for cinemas ostensibly forces the temporary closure of all of our locations in the affected areas,” read the statement.

However, other Cineplex theatres across Ontario that aren’t in the orange zone remain open.

Those in both yellow and green are allowed to have 50 people per screening room, not per venue.
