Toronto Police have responded to Ontario's new COVID-19 enforcement rules, which give police the power to stop anyone who is outside their residence.

Several forces across the province have issued statements saying they will not be conducting the random stops in their regions, and now police for the province's capital have said the same thing.

In a tweet, they said, "the Toronto Police Service will continue to engage, educate and enforce, but we will not be doing random stops of people or cars."

They followed up by saying the force "will continue to engage and enforce equitably and effectively, recognizing always that we must inspire public trust."

Premier Doug Ford announced the new enforcement measures on April 16 as part of stricter restrictions put in place to help fight the third wave of COVID-19 in the province.
