The movement of masking face coverings compulsory indoors across Ontario continues, with more regions joining the initiative.

A bylaw enforcing mandatory masks in York Region in indoor public spaces will be in effect from next Friday, July 17, shared Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti on Thursday, July 9.

It will stay into effect until November 30, 2020, with a possible extension.

Scarpitti has been a leading advocate of the move in York Region for several weeks now as business and stores began reopening in the area north of Toronto.

And he finally got his way as York Regional Council unanimously approved the motion on Thursday.

This brings York in line with neighbouring Toronto and Durham Region, which have both already made masks mandatory indoors, with some exceptions. Peel Region joined the scheme this week, with bylaws taking effect tomorrow.
