Heavy bursts of snow are set to turn the city into a winter wonderland today, according to Toronto's weather warning issued early this morning.

EARLIER: Environment Canada issued a winter weather advisory, which says the intense conditions will pick up by mid-morning.

5-10 cm Snowfall amounts expected in Toronto

The advisory states that up to 10 centimetres of snow could fall by the end of Wednesday.

According to Environment Canada, the snowstorm will be over Burlington in the early morning, moving towards southwestern Toronto as the day goes on.

By the end of the day, the snow should move south towards Hamilton.

"Heavy bursts of snow and blowing snow can significantly reduce visibilities," says the advisory.

Travel could be compromised, as conditions will be changing rapidly and reduce visibility.

Environment Canada suggests "postponing non-essential travel as snow-covered and icy roads are expected."

The city has also opened warming centres for residents experiencing homelessness as temperatures plunge into the negatives.

Regions outside of the GTA are expected to see a light dusting of snow as well, ranging from two to five centimetres.
