You're going to have to pay if you want to take the subway this holiday season.

On Wednesday, it was announced that TTC New Years' rides won't be free this year.

The service, which was first offered in 2013, was cancelled due to Toronto's ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

The TTC and its sponsor, Corby Spirit & Wine, stated the move was made because they didn't want to "encourage" people to party this holiday season.

"We hope everyone safely celebrates the end of 2020 by NOT gathering."

However, regular transit service will still run.

Ontario reported 1,890 new cases on December 9, 2020. Out of those cases, 517 were in Toronto.

Toronto and Peel Region will remain in grey level lockdown until December 21, 2020.
