This idyllic BC island near Vancouver is home to one of the 'best small towns to live in'

Time to hop on BC Ferries!

Person in a lavender field. Right: Someone on an island in BC.

An island in BC with a cute small town.

There's a scenic little island in B.C., with a quaint town, rolling fields, and clear water beaches — and it's all just a day trip away from Vancouver. Brimming with local businesses and breathtaking views, this spot is among the best getaways in the province.

It was also recently named among 'the best small towns to live in British Columbia,' on a Narcity poll. With a balance of lively streets and peaceful nature surrounding it, it's no surprise that this place came to mind for many.

While the island has the kind of tranquillity that feels far removed from city life, it's actually not that hard to get to. On BC Ferries, you can sail from the Tsawwassen terminal in Vancouver to Salt Spring in about two hours. From Swartz Bay, near Victoria, you can get to the island in just 35 minutes.

Ganges is the main town on the island, and its streets are lined with eclectic shops, tasty restaurants, and galleries — all next to the scenic waterfront. There are also food trucks here, making it easy to grab a bite while exploring the town.

Grab a coffee from Switchboard Cafe, then explore the cute local shops, and enjoy a patio like Cassette Cafe and Dive Bar.

All around the island, though, you'll find an array of cool spots, passing by the local roadside farm stands along the way.

Scattered among them are local vineyards and cideries you can head to for a drink with a view. Salt Spring Wild Cider House is a go-to here, and Garry Oaks Estate Winery is a popular one for wine tastings.

You can also visit the local lavender farms, like Lavender & Black, for a uniquely scenic experience.

Like any Gulf Island getaway, you need to head to the beach, too. The water here is crystal clear, and there are rocky shores to relax on and take in the view.

From lush forest and sparkling coastline to local artisans and tasty restaurants, Salt Spring is a beloved destination for a reason.
