The May long weekend has arrived, but if you were planning to spend it outdoors in B.C., you might want to think twice. The forecast is calling for cooler-than-usual temperatures and unsettled weather across much of the province.

According to The Weather Network (TWN), the weekend will kick off with much-needed rain. While it's not the most exciting news for your plans, the moisture is welcome given the current dry conditions.

Rain is expected to move across the coastline on Friday and Saturday, so Vancouverites might want to keep their umbrellas and rain boots handy. By Saturday, the wet weather should spread further across the province and intensify. Coastal areas could see up to 50 mm of rain by Sunday, while other regions will receive between 10 to 20 mm.

TWN noted that “a series of systems will bring in several rounds of rain showers” that could linger into early next week across much of the province.

As for temperatures, it's going to be chilly. Expect below-seasonal highs, with Vancouver seeing daytime temperatures hovering between 12°C and 15°C throughout the weekend.

While the forecast isn't ideal for patio season or beach days, there's a silver lining — TWN says the cooler temps and rainfall "should help to temporarily improve the wildfire weather" and possibly "slightly improve the drought conditions."
