VIA Rail is hiring for positions across the country, and some don't require a university degree.
You can make up to $42 an hour or $106,000 a year with these high-paying jobs!
There are current openings for admin assistants, engineers, mechanics, technicians, cleaners, and other jobs.
The positions are located in B.C., Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
All of these VIA Rail jobs offer travel perks, even if the position doesn't require you to travel for work.
So, here's what you need to know about the positions, including salaries and experience requirements.
Diesel Engine Mechanic
Salary: $42.49 an hour, plus an additional $1.50 or $2 an hour for night shifts
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Toronto, ON
Who Should Apply: You must have three years of diesel engine and internal combustion engine experience.
Also, an HDM license is preferred for this job.
Having a 421A license or a 310T license is not required, but it's considered an asset.
Railway Car Technician
Salary: $35.22 to $42.49 an hour, plus an additional $1.50 or $2 an hour for night shifts
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Vancouver and Mission Harbour, BC
Who Should Apply: Red Seal certified tradespersons are preferred, but you can apply even if you're an apprentice.
You should have experience as a millwright, carpenter, plumber, welder, fabricator, or automotive technician.
Electrical Engineer
Salary: $86,366 to $106,687
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Montreal, QC
Who Should Apply: You need to have a university degree in electrical engineering and be a registered member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.
At least five years of experience as an electrical engineer is required.
You also must have experience in:
- designing, analyzing, and modifying electrical circuits or systems, and preparing required documents for production
- electrical (power) controls, electronic controls, and communication systems
Proficiency in AutoCAD design software and Microsoft Office apps is required as well.
Also, you need to be able to communicate in both English and French.
General Worker — Passenger Car Cleaner
Salary: $32.39 an hour, plus an additional $1.50 or $2 an hour for night shifts

Location: Toronto, ON
Who Should Apply: You must have a high school diploma and a valid driver's license for this job.
Also, you need experience in commercial cleaning or building maintenance.
The ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
Senior Administrative Assistant
Salary: $62,717 to $77,474
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Montreal, QC
Who Should Apply: You need to have a college diploma in administration and a minimum of eight years of experience as an administrative assistant to an executive.
Also, you must be proficient in Microsoft Office apps, including Teams, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
The ability to learn technologies as necessary and communicate in both English and French is required as well.
Dispatcher, Police Communication Centre
Salary: $62,717 to $77,474
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Ottawa, ON
Who Should Apply: You must have graduated from high school and have a security, emergency dispatch and/or policing certification from a recognized institution.
At least five years of previous related work experience in a policing, security or emergency dispatching environment is required.
You need to have experience operating computers and computer-aided dispatch, along with knowledge of CPIC, records entry and procedures.
Also, you must be capable of reading maps, operating communications equipment, and receiving, prioritizing and dispatching emergency calls.
The ability to communicate in English and French is also required.
Specialist, Quality Assurance
Salary: $71,971 to $88,906
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Montreal, QC
Who Should Apply: You need a college diploma or bachelor's degree in mechanical or quality assurance, or a similar field.
Also, you must have experience in manufacturing, quality assurance or engineering for rail programs and experience in a similar quality assurance and control job related to heavy equipment.
It's required that you have:
- knowledge of the design of new rolling stock or refurbishment
- knowledge of quality assurance tools and concepts
- knowledge of computers, particularly with Microsoft Excel
You must be able to travel occasionally and speak both English and French.
Railway Car Technician
Salary: $42.29 an hour, plus an additional $1.50 or $2 an hour for night shifts

Location: Toronto, ON
Who Should Apply: Red Seal certified tradespersons are preferred, but you can apply even if you're an apprentice.
You should have experience as a millwright, carpenter, plumber, welder, fabricator, or automotive technician.
Locomotive Engineer

Location: Thompson, MB
Who Should Apply: You must be a qualified locomotive engineer and be Canadian Rail Operating Rules certified.
Operating experience, along with technical and mechanical aptitudes, is required.
Also, you need to be able to meet the physical requirements of the job.
Electrical Technician
Salary: $71,971 to $88,906
Company: VIA Rail
Location: Montreal, QC
Who Should Apply: You must have a college diploma (DEC) in electrical engineering, specializing in electrotechnics, automation, or industrial electricity.
Also, you need at least five years of experience as an industrial electrician.
It's required that you have
- knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and workplace electrical safety standards
- knowledge of AutoCAD software
- familiarity with programmable logic controllers, instrumentation and control, and Human-Machine Interfaces
- understanding of basic electrical concepts, with the ability to read single-line and multi-line diagrams
You must also be able to communicate in English and French.
