The great state of Florida just offered to host the 2021 Summer Olympics if Tokyo, Japan, backs out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Florida's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Jimmy Patronis, laid out the case for Florida to be the Olympics' back-up plan.

I am writing to encourage you to consider relocating the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo, Japan to the United States of America, and more specifically to Florida. Jimmy Patronis, Florida's CFO

Earlier in January, Japan issued a state of emergency when the country surpassed 250,000 cases of COVID-19

Rumors flourished that the Summer Olympics would be canceled again after the events had already been pushed from 2020 to 2021 due to the pandemic.

Since then, the Japanese government has knocked down the rumors and said it is determined that the Tokyo Olympics go ahead.

But Florida wants Japan to know that it is willing and able to step up if the opportunity arises.

"Whatever precautions are required let’s figure it out and get it done," Patronis said in the letter.

The CFO signed off with a request to schedule a meeting with the IOC to discuss the matter, but nothing has come to fruition as of now.
