9 Canadian Olympians That Have Totally Different Jobs When They’re Not Competing

Talk about multi-tasking! 🤯

Managing Editor, Canada

While being an athlete is a full-time job for many Olympians, others have totally different careers when they're not competing and practicing.

Although gold, silver and bronze medals do pay reasonably well here in Canada, it's not much compared to what Olympic competitors make in other countries if they succeed on the podium.

Here are just a few examples of the jobs Team Canada athletes have when they're not competing in international tournaments:

Andréanne Langlois

Who: Andréanne Langlois

The Sport: Canoe-Kayak - Sprint

The Side Hustle: When she's not on the water, Langlois works in nursing. If balancing that with her water sports career wasn't enough, she's also involved with the charities Fast and Female and Radiant Girls.

Simon McTavish

Who: Simon McTavish

The Sport: Canoe-Kayak - Sprint

The Side Hustle: While McTavish does have another job outside of his kayak, it's in a similar field. He works as a sales rep for a sprint kayaking and sailing apparel company — and he's likely pretty good at this role too!

Madeline Schmidt

Who: Madeline Schmidt

The Sport: Canoe-Kayak - Sprint

The Side Hustle: Like Langlois, Schmidt is involved with the non-profit Canadian organization Fast and Female, which aims to keep girls ages 8 to 14 active through sports. Here, she works as the charity's social media coordinator.

Jacob Saunders

Who: Jacob Saunders

The Sport: Sailing

The Side Hustle: When he's not sailing for Team Canada, this Nova Scotian works as an engineer and project manager for a contracting firm. Talk about diverse talents, eh?

Anicka Newell

Who: Anicka Newell

The Sport: Athletics

The Side Hustle: Newell graduated from Texas State University in 2016 with a major in Exercise Sports Science. Since then, she's become a coach and personal trainer when she's not competing at an international level herself.

Oliver Bone

Who: Oliver Bone

The Sport: Sailing

The Side Hustle: Now this guy is multi-skilled! When he's not sailing on the world stage, Bone works as a sous-chef. He's also a trained sommelier and has been working on a Bachelor of Commerce at St. Mary's University.

Danielle Lawrie

Who: Danielle Lawrie

The Sport: Softball

The Side Hustle: Danielle Lawrie must be a busy person. When she's not playing softball for Team Canada she works on television sports programs for ESPN. She also has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington and is a mom.

Andrea Seccafien

Who: Andrea Seccafien

The Sport: Athletics

The Side Hustle: When she's not on the track, Seccafien coaches recreational runners online via a company called Purdue Performance. Like some of her teammates, she's also an ambassador for Fast and Female, but she says she'd like to explore law school when she retires from athletics.

John Gay

Who: John Gray

The Sport: Athletics

The Side Hustle: When he's not steeplechasing, Gay works as the manager for the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track and Field Club. In 2019, he earned a Masters of Business Management from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.
