160K Condoms Are Being Dished Out To Olympic Athletes & They've Been Asked Not To Use Them

They're even being advised to avoid hugging each other.

Contributor

The Olympics are finally back and while things may look a little bit different this time around, athletes have travelled to Olympic Village per usual.

According to NPR, the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics have ordered 160,000 condoms to be distributed among the athletes.

While this may seem like an effort towards safe sex, Olympic athletes have actually been advised to avoid all physical contact with one another on account of COVID-19.

There is an Olympic playbook for athletes and coaches to follow. In that playbook, people are advised not only to limit physical interactions but also to avoid physical contact in general "including hugs and handshakes."

Giving out condoms to Olympic athletes has been a long-standing tradition that was started in 1988 in South Korea. Due to the nature of the pandemic and this year's Olympic games, it looks like the condoms that are being distributed are more for souvenir purposes than for immediate use.
