Air Canada's Phone Message Enticing Canadians To Fly To The U.S. Has Been Nixed

Flying anywhere in 2020 is something that requires a lot of forethought. Questions about whether the trip is really essential should be asked. Air Canada, however, was reportedly promoting leisure travel to the United States, despite ongoing problems caused by the pandemic.

Per Global News, the airline's customer service line had featured a message reminding Canadians that they are allowed to travel by air into the U.S.

The message said "Are you eager to reunite with friends and relatives in the U.S? Did you know that Canadians are permitted to travel by air to or from the U.S. for leisure or business? Review our step-by-step guide available on aircanada.com/travelguidelines to see what to expect while travelling."

As of 8:30 a.m. on August 18, the message appears to have been replaced with a more general one, which says "Air Canada is ready to take off further with over 80 destinations this summer. See our current and upcoming destinations and be inspired by where we can take you by visiting aircanada.com."

In a statement to Narcity, Air Canada addressed the fact that border closures have created difficulties for people.

"By providing transport services we are helping alleviate these problems, but we have publicly said we are not advocating a full reopening of transborder travel," the airline stated.

The government of Canada is currently urging all Canadians to avoid any non-essential travel outside of the country.

While the Canada-U.S. border will remain closed until September 21, there is a loophole that allows Canadians to fly into the United States for non-essential purposes.

They can even fly to Hawaii without having to isolate for 14 days. However, upon returning to Canada, they will have to follow quarantine rules which include the two-week self-isolation period.

While airlines have faced a financial hit from the pandemic, Transport Canada has drafted a plan for introducing flying guidelines that they hope will allow for safe air travel during this time.

Air Canada had previously introduced its own rules for travellers and is even working with a biotech company to develop a rapid COVID-19 test.
