When it comes to the best cities in the world, Canada just scored some serious bragging rights — but Ontario got totally shafted in the process.

Five Canadian destinations were just recognized in a global ranking of the best cities in the world for 2025, and not one of them is in Ontario.

That's right — Travel + Leisure just dropped its annual World's Best Awards, and five standout spots from across the country were ranked as the top places to visit in Canada this year.

From charming coastal capitals to culture-packed metropolises, these cities clearly have global appeal — even if Ontario didn't make the cut.

According to Travel + Leisure, the rankings are based on nearly 180,000 reader responses, with voters rating cities on sights and landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and overall value.

The results highlight Canadian cities that travellers actually love — and keep coming back to — and it's actually the same five cities as last year, with a fresh new order.

Quebec City took the top spot once again, earning a spot in the ranking's "hall of fame" for being on the list at least 10 years in a row.

Readers praised the Quebec capital's French-inspired architecture and historic vibes, with one voter saying, "If you can't get to Paris, go to Quebec."

Montreal and Vancouver followed close behind, earning points for their lively arts scenes and food-forward energy. Both cities also climbed one spot from last year.

Smaller cities also stood out in a big way. Halifax, ranked fourth, was described by one reader as "the up-and-coming city in Canada."

And Victoria — with its waterfront views, British-style buildings and dreamy Butchart Gardens — rounded out the top five.

Notably absent? Toronto. Canada's largest city last appeared on the list in 2023, but has since dropped off after getting edged out by Halifax.

Here's the full list of the best cities in Canada for 2025, according to Travel + Leisure:

  1. Quebec City — Reader Score: 86.79
  2. Montreal — Reader Score: 82.93
  3. Vancouver — Reader Score: 82.79
  4. Halifax — Reader Score: 82.26
  5. Victoria — Reader Score: 80.70

Although no Canadian cities made Travel + Leisure's global top 25 list — where the lowest-ranked city scored just a smidge higher at 88.15 — their high scores still land them firmly in the ranks of the best cities in the world, especially considering how competitive the voting is.

If you're planning your next Canadian staycation or just want to see how your city stacks up, these five spots are officially worth the trip.

Sorry, Ontario — better luck next year.
