This enchanting lakeside town near Toronto is one of Ontario's 'most beautiful' spots to live

It's like stepping into a storybook.

A person standing by a lake. Right: A person standing on a street.

A park in Ontario. Right: A small town in Ontario.

With shimmering lake views, flower-filled streets, and a postcard-perfect downtown, this Ontario town looks like something out of a storybook — and it's been named one of the province's most beautiful places to live.

If spending your days popping into cute local shops, sipping drinks at quaint cafes and wandering along a picturesque shoreline sounds like your ideal lifestyle, this enchanting town might just be your dream destination.

On Narcity Canada's Facebook page, readers shared their thoughts on Ontario's most beautiful places to live, and this European-like town was one of the recommended spots.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a stunning village located along the shores of Lake Ontario, about an hour and a half from Toronto.

According to Niagara Falls Tourism, it's "a well-preserved 19th-century village and the heart of Ontario Wine Country" and is "often described as the prettiest town in Ontario."

The historic downtown "epitomizes old town charm" and offers "whimsical boutiques, enthralling antique shops and delightful bistros — maybe even a horse-drawn carriage or two."

You can find everything from ice cream parlours to restaurants to a year-round Christmas store as you wander along the storybook streets.

Another highlight of the region is its wineries. Niagara-on-the-Lake is surrounded by nearly 40 wineries where you can enjoy lush vineyards, incredible restaurants and more.

There's no shortage of things to do around the area. You can enjoy theatre performances at the Shaw Festival, visit historic sites like Fort George, and explore some of the scenic parks and trails.

The town is also home to a range of festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Niagara Icewine Festival.

According to Frank Leo & Associates, "living in Niagara-on-the-Lake has just the combination of privacy and activity to encourage anyone to call this town home."

However, calling this picturesque town home doesn't come cheap. According to Zolo's July 2025 housing market report, the average home price in Niagara-on-the-Lake is $1,325,341 — higher than Toronto's average of $1,095,981.

But with its old-world streets, European charm, and postcard-worthy scenery, it's no surprise that many consider it one of Ontario's most beautiful places to live.
