Alberta was just dubbed the "freest Canadian province" in a new ranking, coming in at 12th place for the most economic freedom in North America.

The province was ranked as having the most economic freedom in the country, while other provinces were far behind it.

The annual Economic Freedom of North America report was released by the Fraser Institute, "an independent, non-partisan, public policy think-tank," that ranks provinces and states in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

"Individuals have more economic freedom when they are allowed to make more of their own economic decisions such as what to buy, where to work and how to start and run a business. And research shows that economic freedom is fundamental to prosperity," the press release said.

Each of the rankings considers taxation, regulations, government spending and labour market restrictions, using 2022 data.

Alberta came out on top as the highest-ranking Canadian province and tied four U.S. states for 12th place in North America. It was also was the only Canadian province to make the top 15 "most free" states and provinces in the Economic Freedom Ranking for North America.

B.C. was the next one to make the ranking, coming in at 43rd place. Ontario was next at 47th, followed by Saskatchewan at 50th, Manitoba at 53rd, and Quebec at 54th.

Atlantic Canada came in at the bottom for Canadian provinces, with New Brunswick at 57th, P.E.I at 58th, Nova Scotia at 59th, and Newfoundland and Labrador at 60th.
