Alberta’s weather forecast is about to take a chilly turn, with a polar vortex sweeping across parts of Canada. Some spots in Alberta are bracing for temperatures as low as -31 degrees this weekend — yikes!

According to The Weather Network (TWN), this is shaping up to be "one of the most notable and widespread Arctic outbreaks across North America since 2014." So, it's time for Canadians to gear up for a deep freeze.

The Arctic air mass will hit the Prairies, bringing "much colder-than-normal temperatures" to the area, and as it moves through Canada.

TWN warns that the Prairies are in for "severe cold," with wind chills that could dip into the -40s this weekend. Frostbite and hypothermia are risks during conditions like these, so bundle up and take proper precautions.

The cold snap won't stop there — it's expected to stretch across the country. Temperatures in some regions, including the Prairies and parts of Ontario, could plummet to the -30s and even wind chills into the -40s.

In Edmonton, the seven-day forecast calls for a bitterly cold weekend with temperatures hovering around the -30s. Things are then set to warm up slightly as the week begins.

Calgary will see slightly less intense weather, though temperatures there will feel like -27 degrees at times on the weekend.

Don’t forget to layer up and take extra precautions during this cold snap.
