While most people have adapted to wearing protective gear in public, masks in Calgary are becoming mandatory and a new fine is going to help make sure rules are followed.

A spokesperson for the City of Calgary confirmed with Narcity via email that council has voted to decrease the existing fine for not wearing a mask from $100 to $50.

This new fine will come into effect on Saturday, August 1.

Businesses on the other hand can still face the same $100 to $200 fines for failing to properly display signs indicating to customers that masks are necessary inside the building.

On the same day that the motion was passed, council voted to send a letter to the provincial government asking that face masks in schools be made mandatory.
