It's like a summertime trip to Europe.

You don't need to hop on a plane to enjoy a little taste of summertime in Europe. This enchanting Ontario village will transport you to another world with its storybook streets and historic shops.

Brimming with artsy boutiques and cozy cafes, the waterside destination is one of the "most underrated" vacation spots in Ontario, according to Narcity readers. If you're craving old-world vibes and small-town charm, this quaint spot is worth travelling to.

Merrickville is a dreamy village nestled along the shores of the Rideau Canal, about an hour from Ottawa.

It's known as the "Jewel of the Rideau" and was even named "Canada's Most Beautiful Village" in 1998 by Communities in Bloom, and one visit is all it takes to see why—this picture-perfect village looks like it belongs on a postcard.

You can wander along Victorian-era streets and pop into cute local shops for a dreamy summer outing.

According to the Merrickville-Wolford website, "you won't find any parking meters or traffic lights here, but you might find the Town Crier and very friendly villagers," truly adding to the old-world feel.

Merrickville is renowned for its vibrant arts scene and boasts dozens of local artisans selling a wide range of products, including pottery, glass, textiles, and jewelry.

You can also enjoy delicious eateries and ice cream parlours located around the town.

Other activities include strolling along the Rideau Canal or visiting the Merrickville Blockhouse, a National Historic Site that was constructed in the early 1800s to defend the Rideau Canal against potential invasion.

With its European charm and quaint shops, locals say Merrickville is an "underrated" gem to explore this summer.
