Taking a trip abroad right now is a little more complicated than it was before, particularly due to Canada’s latest travel rules.

While the government continues to advise against all non-essential travel, they have shared information about returning home to Canada if you do decide to take an international trip.

A negative laboratory test must be presented by the traveller to the airline or private operator prior to coming to Canada. Government of Canada

After incoming passenger rules were recently updated to include a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding, the government has now laid out exactly what that means.

In a statement, they confirmed that tests must be a COVID-19 molecular test, such as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) test.

Any other types of tests, including antigen tests, will not be accepted.

It must be taken within 72 hours of a traveller’s scheduled departure to Canada unless there is a particular exemption.

To prove they’ve tested negative, a paper or electronic proof of result must be presented to the airline prior to boarding.

The test result is required to include elements like the traveller’s name and date of birth, the name and address of the place that supplied the test and the date it was taken.

The type of test conducted must also be listed on the document, as well as the end result.

Despite the required proof of COVID-19 testing, incoming travellers are still required to quarantine for two weeks under Canada’s Quarantine Act.

Failure to do so can result in huge fines and even prison time.

In addition, Canadians who take discretionary trips abroad will no longer be able to claim COVID-19 benefits during their quarantine period.
