If you're looking to save money at grocery stores in Canada, you can get extra savings as a student.

A few retailers offer student discounts to post-secondary and high school students.

That includes Sobeys, Metro, Food Basics and more.

You can get set discounts (like 10% or 15% off purchases) and special deals available to students.

Some grocery stores only offer student discounts on certain days of the week. That means you need to be strategic about when you shop.

So, here's what you need to know about grocery store student discounts in Canada.

Metro

You can get the Metro student discount at select stores in Ontario and Quebec.

When you show your student ID at the checkout, you instantly get 10% off your total purchase.

In Ontario, 14 stores offer the student discount every day of the week, and 19 stores offer the discount on Tuesdays only.

In Quebec, the student discount program is offered at five stores from Monday to Wednesday.

You must be a student at a post-secondary institution in Ontario or Quebec and show a valid student ID or proof of enrollment at checkout to get the discount.

Digital copies of your student ID will be accepted.

The student discount applies to most in-store purchases, but there are some exclusions like alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, gift cards, transit tickets, stamps, and prescriptions.

Food Basics

You can get the Food Basics student discount every Tuesday, but it's only available when you shop in-store.

The 10% off student discount is valid on Tuesdays at select Food Basics locations in Canada.

You need to show a valid post-secondary student ID before you pay for your purchase.

It's not valid on purchases of tobacco, lottery tickets, beer, wine, cider, stamps, Western Union, transit tickets, stamps, gift card purchases, prescription medications, behind-the-counter pharmacy items and professional pharmacy services.

Sobeys

Students save 10% on Tuesdays at select Sobeys stores in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Newfoundland.

It's only available for post-secondary students.

To get this Sobeys student discount, you must show your student ID and Scene+ Card at the checkout.

The discount can only be applied to a single transaction.

It excludes bus tickets/passes, gift cards, postal products, prescriptions, pharmacy services, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, fluid dairy products, lottery and other goods and services.

Safeway

You can get a student discount at Safeway.

It's required that you have a Scene+ card and scan it at checkout to get the discount.

Bulk Barn

Students get 15% off every Wednesday at Bulk Barn.

You must show a valid high school, college or university ID to get the discount.

This Bulk Barn student discount is available for purchases of regular-priced items. But you can use it in addition to the $3 off and $5 off Bulk Barn coupons to save even more money.

FreshCo

You can get a FreshCo student discount by scanning your Scene+ card.
