Jagmeet Singh Is Calling For Trudeau & The Feds To End Legal Fight Against Indigenous Kids

The NDP leader said the PM "refused to commit" to ending the court battle.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling for Justin Trudeau to end "legal actions against Indigenous kids" after the discovery of a mass grave of Indigenous children at a former residential school in B.C.

Speaking in the House of Commons on June 2, Singh asked how the prime minister can take reconciliation seriously while his lawyers appeal a ruling from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that ordered billions of dollars to be paid to Indigenous children and families who were separated by the child welfare system.

"The discovery of 215 Indigenous children at a former residential school has shocked the nation. It's another example of clear proof of the genocidal actions of Canada but it's a moment where we need to move beyond condolences to clear action," Singh said.

"My question directly to the prime minister [is] will he call off his lawyers? Will he stop fighting Indigenous kids in court?" he added.

Trudeau didn't directly answer the question in Parliament. Instead, he said every single survivor of residential schools deserves compensation and that his government is working with communities, families and Indigenous leaders to get support to them.
