Submissions are officially open for Canadians to claim their share of a massive $500 million settlement in a bread price-fixing class action lawsuit against Loblaw — but you'll need to act fast.

If you've bought packaged bread at Loblaws or any of its affiliates in the last 25 years, there's a good chance you're eligible for a payout, and you don't even need receipts to qualify.

On Thursday, lawyers for the national class action announced that the claims process is officially open for the $500 million Loblaw bread price-fixing settlement.

This comes after courts in Ontario and Quebec approved the deal earlier this year, resolving all claims against Loblaw Companies and its parent company, George Weston Ltd., in one of the most high-profile class action lawsuits in Canada this century.

The lawsuit accused major grocery chains in Canada — including Loblaw, Sobeys, Metro, Walmart and Giant Tiger — of rigging the price of packaged bread for two decades.

Now, Canadians who were affected can finally claim compensation for the Loblaw portion, while lawsuits against the other grocery giants are still ongoing.

The settlement claims portals are now live at CanadianBreadSettlement.ca and QuebecBreadSettlement.ca. If you lived in Canada on December 31, 2021, and bought packaged bread from Loblaws, No Frills, Superstore, Your Independent Grocer or any other Loblaw-banner store between 2001 and 2021, you're likely eligible to file a claim — and the process is really simple.

In order to claim, you'll need to share some basic personal information, confirm that you purchased packaged bread for personal use between 2001 and 2021 and say where you bought the most recent bread product. While you don't need to provide receipts or any other proof of purchase, you must sign a declaration confirming your claim is true — under penalty of perjury.

Claimants can file online in just minutes, and payments will be made sometime next year via Interac e-transfer or cheque.

The final amount depends on how many people submit valid claims. If you previously got a $25 gift card through the Loblaw Card Program back in 2018 or 2019, that amount will be deducted from your settlement share. And if your calculated payout is under $5, you won't get anything.

So, how do you claim? Head to the correct website based on where you lived at the end of 2021. Residents of Quebec should file at QuebecBreadSettlement.ca, while everyone else in Canada can go to CanadianBreadSettlement.ca.

But make sure you act fast — the deadline to submit a claim is December 12, 2025.

Class counsel says they've worked to make the process "straightforward and easy for consumers to use" — so if you've ever felt like the grocery giants owed you something, now's your chance to claim it.

Just don't wait too long! Once the deadline passes, that money's off the table.
