This new Lotto 6/49 winner thought he only won $100,000 and was happy with that.

But then his friend checked the ticket and told him it was actually a $1 million win!

It was recently announced that Edmonton resident Bao Tran won $1 million from the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball draw on May 21, 2025.

He bought the winning Lotto 6/49 ticket at the Hughes gas station on 97 Street in Edmonton.

The winning number on his ticket was 36342785-01.

Tran thought that he had won $100,000, but then he showed a friend his winning ticket, and he realized he had actually won $1 million!

"I scanned [the ticket] in the store," Tran told Lotto Spot. "I was very happy, and I told my friend it was $100,000."

"When I showed him, he looked closely and said, 'No, this is $1 million,'" he said. "I hugged him."

Tran was excited to find out that he won $1 million with Lotto 6/49, but now he's even more excited to surprise his new wife with the million-dollar prize.

"I just got married in Vietnam, and I'm going to surprise my wife by purchasing a house and a new car for her," he revealed.

"I was happy with the $100,000," Tran said. "Now, I feel very happy."

There are two multimillion-dollar prizes available with each Lotto 6/49 draw.

With the Classic Jackpot, six numbers from one to 49 are drawn, and you can win the $5 million jackpot if you match all six winning numbers.

Each Lotto 6/49 play also includes a unique 10-digit Gold Ball draw number for the Gold Ball Jackpot.

A winning number is drawn from all selections for each draw. Once a winning number is drawn, a separate Gold Ball draw determines if the prize is the Gold Ball Jackpot or $1 million.

If the Gold Ball is drawn, then the ticket with the winning number scores the big Gold Ball Jackpot.

If one of the white balls is drawn, the ticket with the winning number gets $1 million.

So, in the draw on May 21, Tran scored $1 million with his ticket because a white ball was drawn.

The Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball Jackpot starts at $10 million and can reach $68 million.
