This storybook island near Ontario is a gorgeous spot for a getaway. With quaint streets, horse-drawn carriages and European charm, you'll feel like you hopped on a plane and jetted off to a far away land.

Fall brings a new kind of magic to this destination and it was recently named among the best places to visit in the U.S. during the autumn season.

On September 18, USA Today announced the 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards for 2024 and the island earned a spot on the list of the "10 best spots in the US to visit this fall."

Ranked as the second-best fall destination in the country, Mackinac Island is just a ferry ride from Ontario and is home to an enchanting town that's straight out of a storybook.

The 4-square-mile Michigan island has just the right autumn vibes, according to USA Today. "Crisp, sunny days with vibrant foliage give way to a slower pace of life in this resort town," the article states.

One of the best ways to enjoy the foliage on this island is with a horse-drawn carriage ride. Mackinac Island is actually car-free, meaning that locals and visitors get around by bicycle, foot and carriage.

According to Mackinac Island, it's "one of the best places in Michigan to see gorgeous fall colour because the surrounding waters accentuate the vibrant yellows, reds and oranges."

The quaint downtown is like a little slice of Europe and you can explore the local shops, indulge in food and more.

Halloween weekend offers trick-or-treating downtown, costume parties and spooky vibes throughout the island.

During your visit, you won't want to miss out on the "famous" fudge.

From Ontario, you can reach the island by ferry, with border crossings near Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor, and Sarnia. You can also visit the island by plane or cruise ship.

There are many spots to book an overnight stay, from charming bed and breakfasts to cute inns.

The top fall destination in the U.S. for 2024 is Gatlinburg, Tennessee, offering mountain hikes and gorgeous colours.
