Some hateful" messages have been shared online, prompting a Vancouver company to issue a public apology. These messages allegedly came from Vancouver Candle Co. and were sent to another local business. In an attempt to bring local racism to the forefront, Warner McDaniel Agency has shared the racist messages its staff received over the years on Instagram.

The Warner McDaniel Agency is a wholesale apothecary and lifestyle agency. 

In an Instagram post on Sunday, June 7, the company claimed that it's experienced racism and as a business owned by women of colour, it wanted to share its story. 

The B.C.-born owner posted on Instagram stating that the business struggled with deciding whether or not to share the messages. 

“What we are sharing has left us speechless, heartbroken and silent,” read the post.

After months of threats and intimidation, Warner McDaniel Agency says it filed a complaint with the Vancouver police. 

Choosing to share the story, the company wrote that sometimes discriminatory and abusive behaviour can “lurk In the shadows and be vailed.”

Choosing to speak up, the company posted several messages they've received. 

Some of these messages are allegedly from Vancouver Candle Co. 

The first message in the series is from a number with no contact info. The text asked if the person they were talking to was Christina, the agency’s co-founder. 

Without a response, the person then calls Christina a derogatory name and wishes her store would burn down. 

There are several other messages of the same nature, some using derogatory words toward the black and Jewish communities. 

The person says in one of the messages that they're not racist as they have “coloured friends” and are “married to a brown man.”

Since the screenshots have been shared, the business has made its own comments about the situation. 

Calling itself “far from perfect,” Vancouver Candle Co. says it's sorry. The post on social media adds that its staff is looking inward to reflect on words and actions that have offended others. 

The company wrote that they have paused content to amplify “voices that matter” on their platform's stories. They are also allegedly taking time to focus on educating themselves about racism. 

While the company apologized, it did say the “fabrication of words” and context is not something it will support or sit in silence about. 

It noted that the Warner McDaniel Agency didn't disclose many things, most of which are regarding ongoing litigation that began in 2019, said the candle company. 

The company also told their Instagram followers that the two businesses haven’t had communication since 2018 when their sales relationship ended.

The other texts from them allegedly date back to 2017.

The company ends its post by saying it wants to spread positivity instead of “hate and harm to other small businesses.”

The Warner McDaniel Agency has since released another post to thank everyone for their messages of positivity and sharing their similar experiences.
