The Toronto sign will be dimmed tonight to mourn the victims of the Beirut explosion that occurred earlier on Tuesday, August 4. The incident has killed at least dozens and injured many more thousands of Lebanese, reports CBC. The extent of the damage is still unknown.

The explosion had a devastating impact on the city, especially the areas surrounding the warehouse in which the explosion took place. 

Mayor John Tory made the announcement regarding the Toronto sign via Twitter at 5:44 p.m. on Tuesday.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to the tragedy by saying that Canadians are keeping victims in their thoughts today.

Footage of the explosion has been shared widely over social media, showing the huge destruction it left in its wake.

The hashtag #Beirutblast has gone viral in Canada, with Canadians sharing their condolences across the world.
