This enchanting Ontario beach town has rainbow houses that will transport you to San Francisco

It's like a little slice of California.

Lead Writer, Travel

You can find a little slice of San Francisco right here in Ontario. This charming beach town is just a road trip away from Toronto, and it's home to colourful cottages that will whisk you away to California.

Offering sparkling shores, quaint shops and whimsical streets, this destination is worth a summer road trip.

Grimsby is a charming small town perched along the shores of Lake Ontario, just over an hour from Toronto.

Known as the "gateway to Niagara," the destination offers scenic landscapes, outdoor activities, attractions and more, making it a dreamy spot to spend a sunny afternoon or enjoy a weekend getaway.

One of Grimsby's most unique features is its beach, bordered by a whimsical neighbourhood of colourful heritage homes that look like they've been plucked from the streets of California.

Dubbed the "gingerbread cottages" and Grimsby's own "painted ladies," the vibrant houses rival the iconic Victorian homes of San Francisco.

You'll find cottages painted in vibrant shades of yellow, blue, pink, purple, and more — each adorned with quaint gingerbread trim and surrounded by enchanting gardens.

Many of these whimsical cottages predate 1945, and some have been protected as significant cultural heritage resources under the Ontario Heritage Act, so their storybook charm will be preserved for years to come.

While the "painted ladies" are magical to experience, it's important to remember that they are people's homes. Visitors should keep to the roads and sidewalks and stay off private property.

The beach itself is small and can get quite busy during the summer months. It's recommended to come early to avoid the crowds.

Grimsby also offers attractions like a local museum, art gallery, and delicious eateries to enjoy.

If you're dreaming of a little taste of California, this beach town is the place to be.
